Test ride an 1190 Adventure

Based on reviews so far – and from sales – the 1190 Adventure is fast becoming THE adventure bike to have this year.

KTM’s 1190 Adventure and 1190 Adventure R motorcycles have arrived at UK, Ireland, Isle of Man and Channel Island showrooms – and they’re selling extremely well.

Based on reviews so far – and from sales – the 1190 Adventure is fast becoming THE adventure bike to have this year. In fact, some are saying it’s even better than the R 1200 GS Adventure which has been the best selling for a long time. Remember, KTM won 17 off-road world titles in 2012; no other manufacturer can boast such off-road success. Looks like they’re putting the lessons they’re learning from racing into new technology for us on bikes like the 1190 Adventure.

It’s not just about technology. I’d argue that sales of the 1190 Adventure have been so high simply because the bike is gorgeous, very capable and it stands out from the sea of R 1200 GS bikes that swarm our roads.

The 1190 Adventure, £12,595, is for road riding whereas the Adventure R is for riding all-terrain and costs slightly more at £13,195 (an extra £600).

What you’ll see is that the Adventure and the Adventure R have different tyre sizes. The Adventure has a 19in front and 17in rear while the Adventure R has larger 21in front and 18in rear. The R also has longer travel suspension. Makes sense really as the R is the one you’ll be riding off the road.

On top of these developments – and over the previous 990 Adventure – both models feature a bigger fuel tank (an extra 3.5 litres) so its now up to 23 litres, a nice amount for riding long distances. Service intervals are longer too at every 15,000km (or 9,320 miles) so you can take it on a really long trip and not have to worry about having it serviced halfway through.

Both models have multiple adjustments for rider position and they both have a newly developed motorcycle traction control called MTC as standard. You can also pay extra for electrics which let you have WP suspension with electronic adjustment (called EDS) and a tyre pressure measurement system (TPMS).

Dare to be different from the GS crowd and demo one out. There are some great finance deals to make that £12,495 easier to swallow. Failing that the prices of 990 Adventure bikes have come down. You can pick up a second hand 05 plate for about £4,000 to £5,000 pounds.

Demonstrator bikes are available to ride at every KTM Street dealer, a test ride is free and you can book it online here. You’ll need to call the dealer you plan on visiting to make sure you can test ride an 1190 Adventure or 1190 Adventure R because each Street Dealer has a different insurance policy.
